The 1891-CC is far and away the most available eagle produced at the Carson City mint. It is also the best made eagle from Carson City. These two factors combine to make the 1891-CC the perfect type coin for the collector seeking a single choice example of this denomination/mint combination. This issue is available enough in MS62 that I would only purchase a piece that was very high end.

This piece is really a choice coin with blazing mint luster, lovely rich orange-gold and rose color and an overall vibrancy that is not typically seen on a Carson City gold coin. I think MS62 is a real "sweet spot" for this issue as you are getting a nice looking, really "new" coin but you are not paying an arm and a leg for it. Trends in MS63 jumps, making MS62 an ideal grade for the collector.

As recently as a decade ago, the 1879-CC was considered to be one of the key Carson City gold issues. In fact, it was probably given higher regard than any gold issue not dated 1870-CC. This had to do primarily with the fact that its mintage is the single lowest figure for any gold coin ever struck at this popular mint. Today, we know that the 1870-CC is the rarest eagle. But I feel that the 1879-CC is the second rarest in terms of overall number known and it is very undervalued in relation to issues such as the 1872-CC, 1873-CC and 1878-CC. Until an Uncirculated example turned up a few years ago, the 1879-CC was unknown in Uncirculated and it remains unique in Mint State.
